Eve,
Heidi Klum, Nicky Hilton among Us Weekly revelers
Friday, April 18, 2008

By SANDY COHEN
Eve,
Heidi Klum and Nicky Hilton were among the beautiful people who turned
out for US Weekly magazine's Hot Hollywood party.
The
annual celebration of young Hollywood style, held Thursday at Eva
Longoria's new Beso restaurant in Hollywood, also drew famous faces
from MTV's "The Hills" and ABC's "Dancing With the Stars."
Lauren
Conrad chatted up the press on the red carpet outside as Ian Ziering
shimmied across the dance floor under crystal chandeliers. Klum shared
a table with friends as Cheryl Burke stole a smoke outside.
Meanwhile,
Marlee Matlin and Cristian de la Fuente commanded a corner in the
upstairs VIP room, which
was all
red vinyl booths and velvet wallpaper.
Though
will.i.am disappeared into the crowd shortly after his arrival, his
presence was loudly felt as DJ Steve Aoki spun his tunes over the
club's bass-heavy system.
Despite
a capacity crowd, Eve talked her way into the VIP area: "I'm sure it
will be OK," she assured a security guard. Rumer Willis, wearing long
hair extensions, didn't have the same success and fled with pals when
the doorman turned her away.

Misses Ukranian Designer's Debut
Tuesday, March 11,

By SOLVEJ
SCHOU
Where
was Paco Rabanne when Ukrainian designer Veronika Jeanvie needed him at
her U.S. debut?
Rabanne,
whose experimental plastic and
metal dresses in the '60s launched his decades-long career, was
noticeably absent at Jeanvie's headlining show Monday at Mercedes-Benz
L.A. Fashion Week "because of a family emergency," said publicist
Alexandre Boulais. He did not elaborate.
That
unfortunately left the event, billed as
"Veronika Jeanvie consulted by Mr. Paco Rabanne," without its iconic
Spanish-French anchor, and cast the spotlight squarely on 28-year-old
Jeanvie and her bright, bling-heavy and at times gaudy designs.
Top
that off with the
pressure of Jeanvie being the first Ukrainian designer to
present a collection in the United States, according to the show's
publicists. Vogue editor-at-large Andre Leon Talley, designer Eduardo
Lucero and musician Kelis all sat in the audience.
"It's
normal to be nervous,
but today is going to be OK," Jeanvie told The Associated Press
backstage at Culver City's Smashbox Studios -- her fast Russian
translated through an interpreter.
She
called Rabanne, who she met in Kiev
during a fashion week two years ago, "my spiritual father."
"He is
a genius, a big
person in fashion, a good friend. When he sees my sketches he critiques
them," said the designer, wearing her own checkered black and white
hybrid floor-length skirt and short shorts.
Jeanvie
first showed her new collection in
Paris in January, but said she created a few more colorful dresses for
her L.A. debut "for the celebrities."
Her
inspiration was the ocean, sky and green
plants she saw while on vacation in England and France, she said.
She was
also influenced by
Rabanne's dresses made out of round metal discs, which created a buzz
in 1966.
"I
use both metal and soft materials like silk, a contrast showing that
women are strong and soft at the same time," Jeanvie said.
With
rock tunes blaring
overhead, models strutted down the runway in towering heels and clad in
an array of shiny fabrics, from silver and gold hot pants to a
skintight gold bodysuit paired with a sort of chain-mail poncho.
Rabanne's
influence was
obvious, from the blankets of linked silver hoops draped over simple
shifts to a jingling, jiggling chain-mail bikini and a white skirt that
seemed to be fashioned out of a towel, albeit lined with silver.
But
while Rabanne's fashion
experiments -- from paper dresses to sexy, futuristic costumes for Jane
Fonda in 1968's "Barbarella" -- were explosively innovative 40 years
ago, Jeanvie's designs seemed overwrought.
A
'70s-esque shimmering catsuit sported huge silky bell bottoms. A black
thigh-skimming skirt and matching belly-baring top looked more
Hollywood street than red carpet. One floor-length dress paired silver,
sparkly fabric with clashing white lace.
Other
dresses came in fluorescent pink,
green, purple and blue, all accented by silver or gold.
Jeanvie
fared best when she
toned down the costume-y look.
A
turquoise blue strapless cocktail dress
filled out nicely with a voluminous skirt accented with white. Spangly
diamond shapes patterned a shift with a shell top, something Kelis
could pull off.
Even
when Jeanvie walked down
the runway at the show's end, she wore a black dress with a
rounded, sculptured skirt unflattering to her slender frame.
Still,
the designer looked
more than happy to be a dominant part of L.A. Fashion Week, which will
also feature fall collections from "The Hills" star Lauren Conrad, the
Pussycat Dolls, Nicky Hilton's Nicholai line and L.A.-based edgy men's
wear label Elmer Ave.
"Los
Angeles is a city of sun, positive
energy, a city of dreams," Jeanvie said, grinning.

Rag
& Bone Are Serious About NY Fashion
Saturday, February
02, 2008 3:51:46 PM
By SAMANTHA
CRITCHELL
Rag
& Bone declared
itself as a serious New York Fashion Week player with a fall collection
that was equally somber and stylish.
The
label, known mostly for its denim just a
few seasons ago, showed serious clothes for men and women on Friday --
clothes worthy of the buzz designers David Neville and Marcus
Wainwright have been generating and of their up-and-comer award last
year from the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
A
packed house that
included Gisele Bundchen and Julianne Moore saw a parade of gray, black
and navy clothes on the runway at midtown Cipriani that seemed loosely
military-inspired, but the look was more a retro Russian style than
that of a modern-day soldier.
One of
the best men's looks was a Navy
officer's coat worn with a slim cashmere trouser, while a great women's
outfit was a black wool duffel coat worn with a black silk tie-tuxedo
shirt and a jodphur-style legging.
A
fitted "cigarette" minidress with chunky
black beads forming a vertical stripe down the front and back was one
of the few pieces with any adornment, really making an impact,
The
female models wore
berets on their heads in that chic way that French women do it without
seeming costume-y at all.
The
designers made clear, though, that their
commitment is to the local fashion industry and nowhere else with the
phrase "Handmade in New York" beamed on to the walls under its name.
Neville and Wainwright have been active in a campaign to keep
manufacturing in the Garment District.

Catwalk
Queen's Best Dressed
2007 List

Today Grazia
revealed which celebs made
their Best Dressed for 2007 list with Sienna Miller coming in a number
1. While she may be credited with reviving 'boho chic' a few years
back, we haven't quite seen the same level of fashion-forwardness as
seen in previous years, despite her launching Twenty8Twelve this year.
Instead, it's a bevy of new fashion-savvy celebs who are quickly
gaining our attention. So sit back and have a gander at which stars
made our list...
Catwalk
Queen's Best Dressed 2007 List - The Winners:
Eva Green
Eva
has grown in leaps and bounds since scaring the wits out of us with her
often witchy-like red carpet appearances during the promotion of James
Bond: Casino Royale. But since making her stunning debut at Cannes Film
Festival in Dior couture back in May, we've fallen in love with the
raven haired beauty. Keep it coming!
Cate Blanchett
Never
failing to push the fashion envelope, Cate Blanchett rarely slipped up
this year except for some questionable Muu-muu styling (little did we
know it was to cover up a pregnancy! A close friend of Giorgio Armani,
Cate is often seen wearing pieces from the designer's collections and
definitely deserves a place in our style hall of fame (if we had one!)
Kate Bosworth
I
simply adore this gal and her ability to always hit the nail on the
head with her designer wardrobe. I guess being mates with Karl
Lagerfeld (she's often seen in Chanel) and having a model boyfriend
James Rousseau, can only increase your fashion pulling power.
Kate Moss
It's
all about the Kates isn't it? Since losing that horrible Pete Doherty
man, Kate has leaped forward a million miles in our books. Post Doherty
break-up and with the added bonus of a fringe, the supermodel is
striding around London in some fantastic ensembles and hitting the
party scene with some killer outfits mostly from her own range for
Topshop. Keep it up Kate!
Thandie Newton
Don't
we all just adore this lady? Not only is she best mates with all the
designers, but she's shown her support for the industry numerous ways
by getting behind the British Fashion Awards amongst other things. We
wish we owned a wardrobe like hers!

Catwalk
Queen's Best Dressed 2007 List - The Newcomers:
Charlotte Gainsbourg
Actress and
musician Charlotte Gainsbourg
has been setting off fashion fireworks particularly since her cover for
French Vogue. The Times called her "effortlessly hip" and we totally
agree; her style is casual and creative but always that little bit too
cool, although she would disagree of course. Being the daughter of Jane
Birkin and half sister of Lou Doillon, we could hardly expect anything
less.
Rihanna
Her
song Umbrella nearly drove me to my limits but Rihanna has been setting
tongues wagging with her cutting edge style still since shooting onto
the scene earlier this year. Fond of wearing dominatrix style heels and
body-con wear, the tiny popstrel even had an umbrella released under her own branded
name... yes, really!
Emma Watson
With
a face and style like hers it's no wonder the star of the Harry Potter
films is rapidly gaining attention from the fashion industry. She has
been earmarked to be the next face of Chanel, which isn't any wonder
considering she wore nothing but Chanel for most of this year. Still,
the young actress has proven she can hold her own amongst her peers
which instantly gets her our vote!
Agyness Deyn
It's
been non-stop Agy Deyn this and Agy Deyn that for much of 2007 which is
why she couldn't be left off our best dressed list. Anything and
everything seems to work on this gal, maybe because she's a hugely
successful worldwide model, but its her own personal style - a mixture
of layers, woolly jumpers, combat boots and colourful scarves, which
has earned her a place on our list.
Margherita Missoni
Being
the young ambassador for Missoni, her family's fashion house,
Margherita Missoni has been involved in the industry her entire life
but it's only been this year that she's really hit her straps. She also
stars in the label's fragrance campaign and it's not difficult to
understand why.

Nina
Ricci Show Mixes Rave and Black-Tie
Monday, October 08,
2007
7:54:48 AM
By JOELLE
DIDERICH
The
Paris ready-to-wear
shows ended Sunday with a celebrity-packed show at Louis Vuitton, a
critically acclaimed display from Lanvin and a poetic collection at
Nina Ricci.
The
displays capped a diverse week with competing trends. While some
designers fell for bright prints and fit-and-flare dresses with full
skirts, others drew from men's fashion with no-frills tailoring in
somber shades.
Stars
including musicians Kanye West and Courtney Love pressed into the
Vuitton show, held in a tent in the courtyard of the Louvre museum
where models paraded in flashy outfits inspired by U.S. artist Richard
Prince.
American
designer Marc Jacobs has propelled Vuitton to the top by asking
contemporary artists to customize its trademark monogram bags. For next
spring, he sent out totes and handbags featuring bleeding stains of
color and sentences lifted from Prince's work.
Clothing
carried on the dishabille theme
that Jacobs explored with his eponymous line in New York last month.
Sequined skirts mixed with gauzy layers of lilac, pink and blue tulle.
Panels
were sliced from the
back of masculine staples so that a trenchcoat revealed a saucy lilac
girdle and a tuxedo jacket exposed a lacy pink bra.
"I
thought it was quite
cheeky," style icon Victoria Beckham told The Associated Press. "For me
it was a very, very fun collection."
Photographers
loudly booed before the Jacobs
show began because it started more than an hour late.
Backstage
after the Vuitton
show, the designer -- who completed a stint in rehab earlier this year
-- was a jangle of nerves.
"I hope
you weren't out there complaining!"
Jacobs said as he greeted friends, pausing to ask a collaborator for
cigarettes. "I'm really freaking out here!"
Jacobs
said the outfits were inspired by
Prince, who created controversy in the 1970s by re-photographing
existing images. Jacobs himself has been criticized for copying the
work of others.
"Richard
is the king of appropriation, which
I totally believe in as long as one changes at least three things,
which we always do -- regardless of what any critic might say," he said.
It is
an open secret that
many designers raid vintage clothing stores for inspiration.
Lanvin
designer Alber
Elbaz, however, believes the vintage trend is over. His draped toga
gowns and ruffled satin cocktail dresses raised a roar of approval from
buyers and critics, who leapt to their feet to applaud him.
The
toga dress was a theme
of the Milan collections last week, but Elbaz's was distinct.
It
showed in the metal
rings that held together a white linen tunic covered in feathers, or a
black satin one-shouldered evening gown with industrial zips at the
shoulders and seams.
Belgian
designer Olivier Theyskens has made
remarkably light work of rejuvenating the Nina Ricci brand since his
appointment last year. The label is thriving at retail, handbags are in
the works and its flagship store on Avenue Montaigne is about to be
renovated.
The
30-year-old designer said his slim leather jackets and strapless
evening gowns were based on the idea of young women walking home at
dawn from a rave party or black-tie ball.
Sunlight;
speckled the catwalk as models in
drop-waisted silk dresses in crinkled light pink or gray silk emerged
from a set that opened out onto the Tuileries Garden. The display ended
with a full evening dress made from translucent pleated white fabric.
"I
wanted to end on a
purely Ricci note," said Theyskens, noting the house was celebrating
its 75th anniversary in fashion this year.

Finding Helena
Word reaches us that
olive-skinned Dane Helena
Christensen has been eyeing up suitable properties with a view to
opening a clothing boutique in London's Notting Hill. One imagines it
will stock a similar range to the boutique she already owns on New
York's Hudson Street, called Butik, which the '90s supermodel opened a
few years ago. Reflecting her own uniquely pretty style, it stocks an
eclectic mix of clothes, candles and flowers from across Europe. 'Many
of our best customers are British', she says, 'so it makes sense to
open our second shop here. Notting Hill would be ideal. There are just
two of us in New York, so it's hard work. But we're keen to move the
business on.'
|
|
It's KM TS - take two
Topshop really is spoiling
us. Just one month after
launching its Kate Moss line - which reportedly earned the store
£3.5 million in its first week - it's unveiling the second
instalment of the ubermodel's collection this week. This time round,
the focus is less on floral-print mini dresses and more on Jimi
Hendrix-style waistcoats, kaftans, and a rather fetching leopard-print
bikini similar to the one Kate wore in Thailand recently. The vests,
one of our favorite pieces of the collection due to the great-feeling
cotton and perfect cut, are reprised in coral, sage green, and canary
yellow. The one-shoulder dress will also be in stores in a choice of
lemon yellow, white and black. for our choice...

No
mom jeans for Heidi Klum. The mother of
three is the sultry star of a new ad campaign for Jordache. The ads,
shot by filmmaker Brett Ratner in the penthouse of the Chateau Marmont
hotel in Los Angeles, show Klum wearing classic Jordache skinny jeans
in dark indigo. In one ad, she is looking over her bare shoulder and
brandishing a riding whip, evoking the brand's horse-head logo.
"With
her success as a
supermodel, businesswoman and mother, Heidi embodies the sexy
confidence that the Jordache brand is about," said Liz Berlinger,
president of Jordache Enterprises, in a statement Wednesday.
Klum,
34, is the host of
Bravo's "Project Runway." She has two sons with her husband, Seal, and
a daughter from a previous relationship.
Elizabeth
Hurley and Brittany Murphy have

Modesty
Gains Currency at Fashion Week
Tuesday, September
11, 2007
4:57:13 PM
By SAMANTHA
CRITCHELL
If
the
world needs another sign that Britney Spears' look is yesterday's news,
check out New York Fashion Week.
Gone
are the skin-centric,
tummy-revealing and possibly private-part exposing trends that Spears
and friends like Paris Hilton made ubiquitous. Instead, designers are
embracing modesty, using sheer fabrics and lingerie looks to subtly
hint at sexiness.
It's
an extension of the
ladylike trends for fall; designers seem to have made the collective
decision that a lot of skin isn't in.
On
Tuesday, Monique
Lhuillier presented sophisticated, fluid looks that celebrate a woman's
shape without squeezing it. Carmen Marc Valvo showed tasteful swimwear
with plenty of coverage, flattering pintucks and low leg openings. Even
pantyhose made a comeback over the weekend at the Derek Lam show.
Of
course,
every rule has an exception. Marc Jacobs bucked the trend on Monday
with plenty of glimpses of bras, slips and tap pants -- but the show
was more of an artistic statement than a presentation of wearable
fashions, with the entire collection shown backward, beginning with his
bow.
New
York Fashion Week wraps up Wednesday after an
eight-day preview of the spring-summer looks of 100 or so designers.
MARC
JACOBS
Marc
Jacobs
presented his spring collection late Monday night to a packed crowd
that had been waiting for two hours. (Courtney Love was photographed
smoking a cigarette in the front row while waiting for the show to
start. Victoria Beckham and Sheryl Crow didn't wait quite as long --
they seemed to know to show up "fashionably late.")
But
it
looked like he could have used a little more time. Models were wearing
what Jacobs called "scrap tops" and "one-half gowns" -- clothes that
one presumes were left unfinished to make an ironic statement -- thus,
giving the audience plenty of glimpses of their silk, satin and crepe
bras, slips and tap pants.
On
their own, individual
elements of the outfits, such as a black lace cape or a moire
sleeveless trench coat, were very attractive, but wearable clothes
weren't the point here.
The
entire show was staged
backward, beginning with his bow, then the finale and then running
through the looks, starting with No. 56 and ending with No. 1, a denim
cape and sequined gown. Some of the shoes had heels built sideways into
the uppers, while others skimmed so low on the heel they looked too
small for the models.
Even
with all this
"message," the collection largely fit into some of the more important
trends emerging from New York Fashion Week: color-blocking, sheer
overlays, sequins, and nude and natural colors with bright pops from
purple, pink and orange.
MONIQUE
LHUILLIER
Red-carpet
princess Monique Lhuillier turned out a series of pretty dresses that
are sure to make her starlets happy.
The
spring collection,
however, strayed from the volume and all the jeweled embellishment that
have been her hallmark in recent seasons, instead offering mostly
sophisticated, fluid looks.
The
last look might have
been the best example: a black chiffon gown with a fitted corset bodice
and a draped skirt that came together in a bow at the waist. There were
plenty of more colorful options, including seafoam-colored chiffon
strapless gown with draping all over the top -- down below the hips --
and then a billowy handkerchief hem and a nude-colored chiffon
crisscross draped bodice gown.
These
fashion confections --
inspired by Laduree macaroons -- carried through to some outstanding
daytime outfits, including a light yellow metallic tweed suit with a
shawl-collar jacket and a slim pencil skirt worn with a cream-colored
V-neck halter blouse with ruffles down the front.
But
even
when you're dealing with such dainty, delicate details, there can be
too much of a good thing and one dress -- a one-shoulder tulle gown
with seemingly endless tiers covered with light green flowers -- was
just too much of everything.
ANNA
SUI
There's
been a lot of talk about happy, sunny clothes as spring collections are
previewed on the runway. But, until the Anna Sui show Monday night,
there hadn't been many signs of happy, sunny models.
Apparently
all it takes to make the catwalkers come to life are colorful wigs,
playful clothes and a soundtrack that includes the old Andrews Sisters
hit "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy."
The
first look on the runway
was a bolero with black sequins, a multicolored diamond-print blouse
and plaid shorts. Is someone likely to wear it to work next season?
Probably not, but it sure looks good on the runway.
For
those
who are indeed looking for Sui to provide real-world wardrobe
solutions, she offered a plaid jacket-and-jumpsuit set -- worn with a
colorful print blouse underneath -- as well as a white-and-black, Art
Deco-themed dress. For parties, there were several pairs of flutter
shorts with tiers of ruffles on the behind and a shirtdress with a
plaid pattern featured on a sheer fabric.
A
black-and-white striped
sateen coat worn with a bow blouse and white linen shorts had a 1970s
vibe, as well as many of the scarf- and shirtdresses done in prints
with bold colors.

CARMEN
MARC VALVO
Carmen
Marc Valvo is a
consistent source of gala-worthy eveningwear and splashy swimwear, so
what was unexpected was the strength of the daywear.
Two
of the
best outfits on the runway at the Bryant Park tents were a raw-silk
officer's jacket in a sandy color with gold buttons, worn with a brown
organza blouse with a cascading ruffle down the front and a tropical
wool "mariner's" pants that hit mid-calf, and super-sophisticated
organza trench coat in a light oyster color. The coat was paired with
an attractive brief-style navy swimsuit, but it actually seemed a waste
of such a good topper.
In
his notes, Valvo said he
aimed to craft clothes to dress the sirens of the sea, tempting them
with seashell colors and mimicking the ocean's ripples with ruffles.
White
silk
gazar made a strapless corset with fanlike pleats light and airy, and
it looked chic with black cocktail pants -- a pleasant break from the
harder-to-wear cocktail shorts that have seem to have been all over
other catwalks.
Valvo's
dresses included a
cerulean-blue cocktail dress with pleated ribbon appliques and a
delicate white gown with a feminine ruffled back.
